Never Too Young!

How young is too young? We get a lot of enquiries from Parents of young children who have shown an interest in learning to play instruments such as the Flute and Saxophone, and until this point we’ve had to respond that unfortunately the child is too young. General consensus is that most brass & woodwind instruments can only be picked up from about 8 years old.

Why is age a problem with these instruments?

Size can be a big factor – at this age, the instruments can sometimes be almost as large as the child! Then there’s the added problem of being able to get a proper sound or being strong enough to hold the instrument correctly. If children start learning too early, they can spend months seemingly “standing still”, while they learn to develop the skills for these instruments which, at a later age, might come a little faster. Understandably, this can lead to frustration on the part of the Student, which can result in them quitting lessons before they’ve properly begun.

jFlute: The Solution

At Sweet Symphony, we’re always looking for ways to make our lessons more inclusive and accessible to all. We’ve been doing a bit of research, and we think we’ve found the answer: the Nuvo jFlute. Lightweight and easy to hold, the jFlute makes learning the Flute a realistic possibility for younger children. It’s ideal for ages 4 and up and is the perfect choice for a child’s first Flute. It’s 100% waterproof so it can be washed frequently. It’s also available in a range of fun, vibrant colours!

The great news is, it’s not just Flute! Nuvo instruments are also available as Clarinets and Saxophones. Using Nuvo instruments, we can now offer Clarinet Lessons from age 6, and (Alto) Saxophone Lessons from age 5.

The jFlute has a fully-adjustable curved head joint to enable younger players to get a great sound from day 1!

If you’d like more information about the Nuvo instruments or would like our help in purchasing one, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help get your little one on their way to making great music!
