Want to Get Started?

Hi! I’m Louise and I’m the founder of Sweet Symphony School of Music.

Sweet Symphony’s aim is to give people from all social, economic and academic backgrounds access to professional, affordable music tuition. We’ve been around since 2007 and that aim is still as relevant today as when I first started.

Clarinet FAQ

Do I need my own clarinet?

Students will need their own clarinet to use in lessons and for practice at home. We can recommend some local retailers who are very reasonably-priced and also offer instrument-rental schemes. Unfortunately for hygiene purposes we’re unable to lend out Studio woodwind instruments.

I’m an adult and I’ve never played before…am I too old to start learning?

Absolutely not – you’re never too old! Although it may be true that children tend to pick up things a little easier (they’re used to learning new things every day), as long as you’re keen to learn and are committed to practise regularly, you’ll make great progress!

What age do you start teaching at?

For clarinet students, we can offer lessons from age 6 using the fantastic Nuvo Clarineo (read about the Nuvo instruments in our blog here). If you’d prefer not to use a Clarineo and instead go straight for the regular Bb clarinet, we’d recommend starting at around age 8.

Do I have to sit music exams?

Not at all. We’re of the firm opinion that music exams should achievements, not targets, and should not be used in place of a clear and enjoyable curriculum. By all means, once a Student is at a certain level we’ll mention exams to them. But they don’t form the cornerstone of our teaching. All Students can choose whether to go down the exam route or whether to simply play for pleasure.
Sweet Symphony exam Students generally follow the Trinity exam syllabus and can conveniently take their exams in our Studio.
