Why Getting It Wrong Is An Important Part Of Learning Music

“I keep getting it wrong.”

If your child has ever said this while practising, you’ll know how quickly a wrong note can turn into frustration. A piece they were excited to learn suddenly feels difficult, and you may wonder what to say to help them keep going.

It’s natural to want to get things right. But learning music involves trying things that aren’t yet familiar – new notes, different rhythms and movements that take time to feel comfortable.

Getting something wrong doesn’t mean a student isn’t musical or isn’t making progress. With the right support, it can help them understand what to work on next.

A mistake gives us something to work with

Imagine a student playing a short passage on the piano. They keep hesitating at the same point, then pressing the wrong key.

That moment tells their teacher something useful. Perhaps they’re unsure which note comes next. Perhaps their fingering makes the movement awkward. Or perhaps they’re trying to play faster than they can comfortably manage.

Each of those difficulties needs a slightly different approach.

Once the teacher helps the student identify what’s happening, they can work on a manageable solution: slow the passage down, practise the movement separately or look more closely at the notes.

The mistake becomes a starting point for learning.

Progress means learning how to respond

Playing a piece correctly is an achievement. So is noticing a mistake and knowing how to approach it.

A student might begin by stopping whenever something goes wrong. Over time, they can learn to pause, find the difficult section and try it in a different way.

That change matters. Instead of feeling stuck with “I can’t do this”, they have a practical next step.

This is one reason regular lessons and consistent practice are valuable. Students have opportunities to revisit challenges, receive guidance and recognise improvement over time. A passage that needed careful work a few weeks ago may eventually feel familiar and comfortable.

Confidence doesn’t require perfect playing

We often think confidence comes from doing something well. But confidence can also grow from working through a difficulty and discovering that it’s manageable.

A student who is worried about every wrong note may hesitate to try an unfamiliar piece. If they understand that mistakes are expected while learning, they have more room to explore, ask questions and have another go.

That doesn’t mean accuracy stops mattering. Students still work towards clear rhythms, correct notes and thoughtful playing. The difference is that they don’t have to achieve all of those things on the first attempt.

They can take pride in the work that gets them there.

Useful practice goes beyond repeating the whole piece

When something goes wrong, the instinct is often to start again from the beginning.

Sometimes that helps. But if the same section keeps causing difficulty, playing the whole piece repeatedly may leave the student feeling increasingly frustrated.

A more useful approach might be to:

• Choose just a few notes or one short phrase.
• Slow down enough to understand what’s happening.
• Work on the rhythm separately.
• Follow their teacher’s advice about fingering or technique.
• Put the section back into the piece once it feels more secure.

The aim is to make the challenge small enough to work on successfully. Students don’t need to solve everything at once.

How parents can help

You don’t need to play an instrument to support your child when practice feels difficult.

Often, the most helpful response is calm and specific. Rather than rushing to correct every mistake, give them a moment to think and encourage them to use the approach their teacher has suggested.

You might ask:

“What did your teacher suggest for that part?”

“Would it help to try a smaller section?”

“Can you hear anything that’s getting easier?”

Notice progress as well as the finished result. “You kept the rhythm steadier that time” or “You worked carefully on that tricky bit” gives your child something concrete to feel pleased about.

If a section continues to cause frustration, mention it to their teacher. It’s useful information for the next lesson, and your child doesn’t have to work it out alone.

Mistakes belong in music lessons

Students shouldn’t feel they need to arrive at a lesson with everything perfected. Lessons are a place to ask questions, tackle difficulties and get help with the parts that haven’t clicked yet.
