What size ukulele is best for me?
There are 4 main types of ukulele: Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritone. Each type has their own qualities and musical range. Read on for a brief rundown of each type of uke to help you make an informed decision.
Soprano Ukulele
Soprano ukes tend to be a favourite among beginners, as this is the instrument that makes the typical “ukulele” sound. The Soprano is also a popular choice with many advanced and professional players because of its high-pitched, melodic tone.
Concert Ukulele
The Concert ukulele is a little larger than the Soprano, boasting a bigger body and longer neck. This greatly increases the volume of the instrument and gives it a deeper, warmer tone. Concert ukes are often seen as the most versatile of the 4 varieties because they have the clarity and resonance to play melodies, much like the Soprano, while having a warmer and more rounded tone, which is more suitable for chords. More room between the frets makes it a bit easier to handle if you have slightly larger hands, whilst still producing the “traditional” ukulele sound.
Tenor Ukulele
The Tenor ukulele is larger still, and due to its size this instrument produces more resonance and tonal warmth. A Tenor uke can often sound like a classical guitar. Most professional players tend to opt for the Tenor, as well as it being very popular among singer/songwriter-style performers. This because the qualities of the Tenor tend to compliment the characteristics of a male or female voice.
Baritone Ukulele
The fourth and final member of the family is the Baritone. At 30 inches long, this ukulele produces the warmest and deepest sound, rather like a nylon-stringed guitar. The Baritone is slightly different from the others in the uke family in that it has different tuning. This instrument is tuned to the same 4 strings as a guitar – D, G, B and E – which means that for those already familiar with playing guitar, the Baritone ukulele is the easiest of the 4 to pick up.
So, which size is best for me?
Ultimately, it boils down to personal choice. Most beginners tend to start with the Soprano, but there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from starting out with a Concert or Tenor – even a Baritone!
