Happy Birthday Georges Bizet!

Happy Birthday Bizet!

Georges Bizet, a French composer of the Romantic era was born on 25th October 1838 in Paris, France. Originally named Alexandre César Léopold Bizet, he showed early signs of musical talent. His father had been a hairdresser and wigmaker before becoming a singing teacher. Bizet’s mother was also an accomplished pianist, and probably gave her son his first piano lessons. His parents recognised his musical abilities from a young age. He entered the prestigious Conservatoire de Paris at the age of 9. Here, he quickly excelled, winning numerous awards and demonstrating exceptional promise as a composer and pianist. Though recognised as a brilliant pianist, Bizet rarely performed publicly.

During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), Bizet served in the French National Guard. After the war, he returned to composing operas. Despite his talent, he struggled to find major success until his final opera, Carmen.

Carmen

When rehearsals for Carmen began in 1874, both the orchestra and chorus faced significant challenges with the score – some parts were deemed unplayable and unsingable. The chorus was particularly unsettled by the expectation to act as individuals on stage, a departure from the traditional practice of simply standing in line.

The production of Carmen was delayed due to concerns that its themes of violence and murder might offend audiences. It finally premiered on March 3, 1875, in a performance that lasted an exhausting four and a half hours, with the last act beginning after midnight. Bizet, disheartened by its initial reception, believed the opera had failed.

Just three months after Carmen’s debut, Bizet tragically died of heart failure at the age of 36. His funeral was attended by more than 4,000 mourners. After his death, Bizet’s work was largely neglected, with many of his manuscripts lost or given away. However, by the early 20th century, his compositions began to gain recognition, and he was eventually celebrated for his brilliance and originality.

Today, Carmen is Bizet’s most famous work, beloved worldwide. Although its premiere was met with lukewarm reactions, it went on to become a triumph, hailed as one of the first operas to portray “life as actually lived.”
